The first three parts of this series explained what Superpowers is, how to run it, and how it coexists with your own skills. This one is the counterweight. Superpowers has 254k GitHub stars and nearly a million installs — and a persistent, substantive criticism that its own author has spent two major releases responding to. If you only read one part of this series before installing, read this one.

The cost structure: cheap to install, expensive to run

It’s important to separate two costs that get conflated in every argument about Superpowers.

The install cost is small. Thanks to progressive disclosure (Anthropic’s docs: ~100 tokens per skill for always-loaded metadata, skill bodies under 5k tokens loaded only on trigger), 14 dormant skills cost on the order of 1,400 tokens, plus the using-superpowers bootstrap that the session-start hook injects into every session. That bootstrap is a real recurring cost — real enough that the v6.1.0 release notes are entirely about compressing it, noting its “size is paid for constantly.”

The workflow cost is the actual bill. Structured brainstorming, multi-section design documents, detailed plans, a fresh subagent per task, and review passes between tasks all spend tokens before and around every line of shipped code. This is not an inefficiency to be optimized away; it is the product. The MCP.Directory analysis of the community debate put it well: the token cost “is by design, not accident.”

What the critics actually say

The Hacker News thread on Superpowers 6 is a good cross-section, and the criticisms are specific:

  • Budget burn. “Huge token guzzler”; one user reported it “burned through all my max plan” on straightforward tasks; another that simple fixes “take literally an hour with all the verification.”
  • Overkill for capable models. The recurring comparison is to elaborate .vimrc configurations: “these prompt shenanigans are just not worth it” now that current models plan competently when simply asked to. Some argue Claude Code’s own bundled skills and defaults have absorbed the best ideas.
  • Rigidity. Plans that specify exact files to edit can hurt on exploratory work where the right implementation is discovered, not pre-specified — the methodology “tells future agents exactly what files to edit.”

What’s striking is what the critics don’t dispute. Per the same discussion, essentially nobody argues the workflow itself is wrong — brainstorm → plan → implement → verify remains, in the words of one summary of the r/ClaudeCode debate, “the highest-leverage habit in agentic coding.” The dispute is whether you need an always-on harness to enforce it, and whether every task deserves it. Telling details from that debate: the poster who disabled Superpowers turned it back on within a day, and the most technical critic was forking it rather than dropping it.

The numbers, such as they exist, support a split verdict. One controlled comparison reported by MCP.Directory found runs 9% cheaper with 14% fewer tokens and better output on non-trivial tasks — while simple tasks cost more with Superpowers, because clarify-and-design phases add overhead the task never needed. Treat these as one community measurement, not gospel; but the direction matches both the author’s own evals and the anecdotes.

The author’s response: measure, then cut

To the project’s credit, the loudest complaints have driven the roadmap, and the release notes read like a case study in evaluating your own methodology:

  • v5.0.6 (March 2026): subagent review loops for plans were removed after regression testing showed ~25 minutes of overhead with no measurable quality gain.
  • v5.0.4: whole-plan review in one pass, replacing chunk-by-chunk review.
  • v6.0.0 (June 2026): spec-compliance and code-quality reviewers merged, review inputs pre-generated — “up to 50% faster and up to 60% cheaper” in the author’s cross-harness evals, with his own caveat that the numbers won’t hold everywhere.
  • v6.1.0: the always-loaded bootstrap itself was compressed.

So “it’s bloated” is a criticism the project actively metabolizes. It is also still true that no amount of optimization makes a design interview free.

When not to use it

Based on the documented costs and community experience, skip or bypass Superpowers when:

  • The task is small and fully specified. A typo fix, a rename, a well-understood one-file change. The clarification phases add cost and latency with nothing to clarify. (You can just say so: “this is trivial, skip the process” — or keep a separate stock session for small edits.)
  • You’re exploring, not building. Spikes, prototypes, and “what does this codebase even do” sessions fight the plan-first structure.
  • You’re on a tight subscription budget. The max-plan burn stories are real. Autonomous subagent runs multiply token spend; that’s the deal.
  • Your team already has a process the agent should follow instead. Two competing methodologies in context is worse than either alone.

The alternatives

Native skills alone. Everything Superpowers does uses public mechanisms — SKILL.md files, hooks, subagents, all documented in the Claude Code docs. You can write a 30-line personal brainstorm-first skill (or adopt lightweight single-skill approaches like the /grill-me-style interrogation skills that circulate in the community) and get a meaningful fraction of the value at a fraction of the cost. The tradeoff: you forgo years of iteration and eval-tested phrasing, and enforcement is on you — a skill without the bootstrap’s “mandatory, not suggestions” pressure triggers less reliably.

anthropics/skills. Anthropic’s public skills repo (161k stars) is the other major collection, and it’s a complement rather than a competitor: where Superpowers is process, anthropics/skills is mostly capabilities — document handling (docx/pdf/pptx/xlsx, source-available), mcp-builder, webapp-testing, skill-creator, design and artifact skills (Apache 2.0). Installing both is coherent: methodology from one, capabilities from the other, domain procedure from your own .claude/skills/ (see part 3).

Stock Claude Code, deliberately. The minimalist position from the HN thread — “stock configuration as much as possible” — is defensible in 2026. Current models with Claude Code’s bundled /plan-style behaviors, a good CLAUDE.md, and a human who asks for a design discussion when it matters will handle most work. Superpowers’ distinct value is consistency: it does the disciplined thing on the task where you were tired and wouldn’t have asked.

The verdict

Superpowers is the strongest existing implementation of an idea that is bigger than the plugin: agents follow written-down process, and process-as-Markdown is versionable, testable, and shareable. For substantial feature work — multi-hour, multi-file, correctness-sensitive — the evidence (author’s evals, community accounts of long-deferred projects actually getting finished) says the overhead buys real quality and autonomy. For small tasks it is, by its own community’s consensus, overkill by design.

The efficient stance for most Claude Code users in mid-2026: install it, let it run on real feature work, bypass it explicitly for trivia, layer your own domain skills alongside it — and read the skills themselves, because the ideas are free even where the tokens aren’t.
